The 583 series sleeping cars of Japanese National Railways are “AC/DC EMU sleeping cars for express train service.” They were designed by Japanese National Railways in 1967 and 1968 as the world’s first electric-powered sleeper trains.
They were equipped with seats for the daytime expresses. On overnight services, the seats can be converted into ‘berths’ that accommodate passengers in beds. This set of the 583 series “sleepers” is a gift from the East Japan Railway Company.
